One Little Complement Can Make Your Whole Day

Thanks to the insane wind we have experienced in my neck of the woods over the last week or so, my allergies are in full swing. It has kicked up all manner of dust, pollen, and who knows what. As a result, I made a quick trip to Walmart on my lunch break in search of allergy medicine today. What I already had just wasn't doing the trick.

My head was stuffy and achy. My nose was runny, and I felt like my throat was full of rocks. I was standing in front of the store's scant allergy offerings when a lady walking by stopped and looked at me. I thought I was in her way and moved over a step. She shocked and delighted me with what she said.

"I love your hair. I feel like when something is working for someone, they should know. It's working for you."

I thanked her profusely. Through my allergy discomfort, I felt my spirit lighten a little. I was still smiling when she walked away. The only reason I wore it down today is because my sinus pressure is so great that I didn't want to add the weight of a hair accessory this morning. I guess I'll have to wear this way more often.

What a nice thing to say to a stranger in a store! More people should spread kindness like that. It doesn't take much to brighten someone's day. Just a kind word or polite gesture that costs nothing but means so much will do it. Many of us have stressful lives and are trying to juggle several thoughts at once.

I try to say a kind word to random people as often as possible. Yesterday, I told a nurse that I loved her shoes. She was taking care of one of my loved ones who was in the hospital. She walked in, and the first thing I noticed was her blue and purple shoes, which I truly did love. When I told her so, she stopped and smiled. She told me how comfortable they were and how they were worth every penny she spent on them.

The world is full of strife. You never know what someone else is going through. Stress from finances, health issues, family worries, job woes, and politics can all conspire to weigh us down and wear us out. Then add in Daylight Savings Time, and we're all exhausted to boot.

Have you spread a little kindness lately?
