It's the First Day of School!

I have two grandkids who started school today. They're in first and second grades. The joy on their little faces warmed my heart and brought back sweet memories. I remember being in those grades so well. It was magical time for me, and I hope they enjoy some of that same magic this year. If they stay alert and pay attention, they'll learn more than they ever imagined this year. I'm excited to hear all about it.

School being back in session means several things. Our youngsters are once again having their young minds stimulated. Retail establishments are enjoying a boost in sales. Parents are spending less money on daycare. School buses are running and making frequent stops. Many kids are walking to and from school. Homework is now an important part of many households.

Most of us think about buses this time of year and are extra careful. However, buses aren’t the only thing for which we should be watchful. We should always watch where we’re going, but especially now that school is back in session. Kids often get distracted and forget to be safe. They get absorbed in their own little worlds and run right out in front oncoming vehicles. I’ve even seen a child or two veer off into the street from the sidewalk due to cell phone distraction.

Now that school is back in session, we all need to pay attention to our driving, be patient, be considerate, and allow plenty of time to reach wherever we’re going. So, let’s put down the cell phones, coffee, breakfast, makeup, and any other distractions to make certain everyone arrives to their destinations safely. I will be leaving for work earlier to avoid some of the traffic, and I encourage everyone to do the same.

Can you think of any back-to-school safety tips?
